Science - Weekly Unplugged Project

By Mom Unplugged, April 19, 2009 9:36 pm

Oh, I had better get this up now before Turnoff Week starts tomorrow and we are all supposed to try not to be on the computer!

The theme for this week’s Unplugged Project was science. I actually have something to post about science, but I didn’t get to it today. Perhaps I will post tomorrow, but I’ll try and post quickly!! I’ll link to it in Mr. Linky below if I get to it.

If you have a science Unplugged Project to post, please link to your project post in Mr. Linky below. If you didn’t do a science project, but want to join in in the future, please read more about the Unplugged Project here. We’d love to have you!

The theme for next week’s Unplugged Project will be:

Have fun!

PS: It’s not too late to join in the Turnoff Week Blog Challenge for a chance to win a $10 Amazon gift certificate (Turnoff Week is April 20 - 26). Read here for more information!

3rd Annual Turnoff Week Blog Challenge

By Mom Unplugged, April 18, 2009 8:50 pm

April 20th through the 26th is Turnoff Week (formerly TV Turnoff Week, but now it applies to all “screens”). As I mentioned previously, I will once again be hosting a Blog Challenge for those who dare to give the no screen (or reduced screen) thing a try for a week. A few intrepid souls have already expressed an interest in giving it a try. Thank you!

I am very late in posting the instructions. Usually I start a few weeks ahead of time! However this year, I have been really busy with other, “real life” obligations.

Finally though - for those who have already indicated that they want to give it a go, and anyone else who wants to attempt it, here is how the 3rd Annual Turnoff Week Blog Challenge will work:

Phase 1 -

1) Write a post about the challenge that sets forth your goals, reasons for joining in, etc. The more people we can reach and get to join in, the more fun and educational it will be! Remember, it is not just about giving up TV, what about the “other screens” in your life? The computer is my personal downfall so I will be concentrating on reducing that.

2) Link to your post in Mr. Linky below (leave a comment too in case Mr. Linky goes haywire, as occasionally happens, and I have to take him off).

3) Steal the Blog Challenge badge and put it in your sidebar, linking to Unplug Your Kids. Let me know if you need help with this step.

Two sizes:

Phase 2 -

Do your best to meet your goals from April 20-26. If you aren’t successful, it’s OK. What is important is to try, and to learn something from the experience.

Phase 3 -

1) After Turnoff Week ends (April 26th is the last day), write a post about how it went: the good, the bad, and the ugly! Sharing experiences helps everyone.

2) I will also write a “How it Went” post and I will put up a new Mr. Linky. Put the link to your “How it Went” post in the new Mr. Linky (plus comment just in case).

3) On Wednesday, May 6th I will draw a random name from among those who completed the challenge by putting up their final post (remember, whether you met your goals or not, completion just means blogging about it!). If you don’t put up your final post and enter it in the Linky before that date, then I can’t enter you in the contest. A random person will win a $10 Amazon gift certificate.

Finally, I have to apologize to a few of you who asked me questions that I have not answered yet. I have just been SO busy this past week, that I haven’t had a chance to think about the blog, or email, or anything much. I do appreciate your questions, and I will try and send you an email tomorrow (Sunday).

Here is the first Mr. Linky. Anyone who wants to enter the 3rd Annual Turnoff Week Blog Challenge should write a post about their intentions and link to it here. Even if you indicated in the comments to my last post about this that you wanted to join, please be sure to link to your goal-setting post here, to make it “official!”

Transportation - Weekly Unplugged Project

By Mom Unplugged, April 13, 2009 8:52 pm

BWO again today. Didn’t get to it. Probably won’t.

It was a sad day for me which is why I am so late (nothing to do with my family though, thank goodness, so don’t worry for us). I don’t feel like blogging.

But finally, here is the Linky for those who did get to the Weekly Unplugged Project (theme: transportation) this week. If you did a transportation Unplugged Project I hope you had fun, and please link to your POST (not just your blog) in Mr. Linky so we can always find you.

If you didn’t do a transportation project but are interested in learning more, please don’t link, but read more about how to join in here. We’d love to have you!

The theme for next week’s Unplugged Project will be:

Enjoy!

3rd Annual Turnoff Week Blog Challenge

By Mom Unplugged, April 10, 2009 8:44 pm

I am finally posting about the 3rd Annual Turnoff Week blog challenge.

This year’s National Turnoff Week begins April 20th and runs through April 26th. I plan on hosting another Turnoff Week Blog Challenge for those who want to take the plunge and give the TV-free life a try!

Can you turn off your TV for one week? Can you turn off your computer for one week? Can you at least reduce your family and personal screen time for one week?

These are things to think about. The idea is not to feel guilt about doing it or not, “succeeding” or not, but simply to gain awareness of the amount of time that we all spend in front of screens these days.

Even without TV, I have my own “screen-issue.” The computer is my downfall. I will try to reduce my computer time that week.

Think about it. Discuss it with your family. Perhaps this would be a good time to try reducing your screen time if you have been considering it.

I’ll post more later about how to join in the Blog Challenge (as always, there will be a small bribe prize for a random participant!!), but I just wanted to plant the seed in your thoughts today.

So, is anyone interested in giving it a try?

Words - Language Bingo (Weekly Unplugged Project)

By Mom Unplugged, April 5, 2009 9:50 pm

First of all, I want to send a HUGE thank you to Lynn of Chronicle of an Infant Bibliophile for doing an excellent job of hosting the weekly Unplugged Project last week while I was away on vacation. I really appreciate it and I hope it was fun for you!

We had a lovely time in Mexico. The kids ran around on the beach and swam in the pool non-stop. This was our first vacation with my youngest in tow where I was actually able to relax a bit. My three year-old was finally independent enough to allow me to read two and a half books. What a luxury.

Surprise! We finally got to the Unplugged Project this week. Although I hadn’t picked the theme words for any particular reason, it actually fit in perfectly with what we have been doing lately: learning French.

I haven’t blogged about this yet, but this summer we are all going to France for three weeks where my two oldest children (6 and 8) will attend a language class. I used to live in France, and am determined that my children learn French. This is step one. I’ll write more about it another day.

Anyhow, inspired by this wonderful French bingo game by eeBoo that we bought and love, I decided to make our own version. I designed our own, changeable bingo game for learning lots of French words.

We gathered up some heavy cardboard, card stock, scissors a ruler and some old nature magazines.

First I cut the cardboard into three equal squares, one for each of my children. My squares ended up being about 8 in. by 8 in. (about 20 cm by 20 cm). It doesn’t really matter how big they are, as long they are square.

Using the ruler, I penciled a grid of nine approximately equal squares on each piece of cardboard. These became the bingo cards.

We cut strips of card stock that were the same height as our rows of three squares, and slightly longer.

Next we cut some narrow ribbon in lengths just long enough to be slightly wider than the cardboard squares.

We put one piece across each vertical line on each card (two per card):

Then we taped the end securely onto the back of the bingo card:

Finally, the really fun part. We searched the nature magazines to find some common animals to cut out, making sure that each animal photo would fit inside one of the nine squares on the card.

We pasted three animals on each strip keeping enough space between each animal for the ribbon.

Finally, we slid the strips under the ribbons to fill in the bingo board. The strips pass easily underneath the ribbons and the slightly longer length makes a nice tab for easy insertion and removal.

When the boards were done, we cut pieces of card stock into squares that were close to the size of our animal squares. I wrote an animal name in French on each card.

Play proceeds like this:

The cards go into a bag. The caller pulls out a card and says the name of the animal. Whoever has it on their card says “moi!” (me) and places the card on top of the corresponding picture. They also must say the name of the animal in French. The winner is the first one to fill up his or her card and must then say the name of all the animals on their card in French.

One thing that is really fun about this is that you can rearrange the strips so the cards change combinations.

You can also make new strips for other categories of study. We did animals, but you could do words having to do with the home, the body, school - whatever you want! As vocabulary knowledge increases, you can mix the categories or words to make play more difficult.

The picture finding and cutting is fun and also provides an opportunity to learn the words before play.

For more advanced players, you could even do verbs and conjugations.

For those of you who did a word Unplugged Project this week, here is the linky. Please link only if you did a word Unplugged Project. Please link to your project post rather than simply your blog (I am trying build up an easily searchable archive). If you did not do a word project, but want to learn more about how to join in, please read about it here. We’d love to have you!
