Leisurely or Lickety-Split?

By , January 4, 2008 8:13 pm

Which is slower: My kids when they get ready for school in the morning, or my blog?

If my blog is slower than my kids, then it is definitely time for a remodel since NOTHING ON THIS EARTH could be slower than my kids in the morning when we are late for school. The half-life of Uranium is shorter than the time it seems to take them to brush their teeth sometimes.

I have been meaning to take a little, informal poll of those who read my blog:

Do you find it slow to load?

Obviously slow is a relative term that is heavily dependent upon technology and personal endurance, but I have had some complaints. I have recently eliminated quite a few items from my sidebars but I don’t know how much difference this has made.

What is your non-scientific opinion of the speed (or lack thereof) that you experience here?

By the way, I am experimenting with a simple white template which will probably load faster.

Thanks for the input!

The site hasn’t been terribly slow to load in the past, but just now it took a very long time to load. Maybe that’s because it heard you say it was slow. :)

As for what might affect the speed, that fact that Blogspot is your blog host could be part of the problem. Blogger can be awfully (and unpredictably) hiccup-y at times. Switching to a different ISP might help.

yeah, it’s been slow. but right now? Now it’s good.

  3. Becky @ Boys Rule My Life says:

I haven’t had a bit of problem with your blog load time. It came up mighty quick just now, actually.

I think Marsha may be on to something with it being Blogger and not your site. I know of several blog that have recently switched to WordPress because of Blogger’s problems.

  4. Mom and Kiddo says:

Your site has been very slow to load and actually several times has made internet explorer shut down (though that may be my own unique problem). I just discovered your blog — yet I keep trying to make it work since I like reading it.

  5. Christine says:

I use Firefox on a Windows XP machine. In the past, your site has been slow to load. I also experience this, though, with other Blogger websites. So is it you or Blogger? I can’t say for sure.

You can go here to check how fast your website downloads at various network connections:

And this one lets you see what your website looks like in different browsers on different machines:

I’m have a web hosting/design company. If you need any help, give me a hollar! Hope those links help! :)

  6. Jenny says:

I’ve never noticed it taking too long to load, but it took awhile this morning. It looks like you’re getting responses all over the map- that ought to make any decision making rather difficult, I’d say!

  7. Claire says:

I wouldn’t say it was awfully slow to load. Not instant but certainly worth the wait :-)

  8. Shaping Youth says:

In our rapid-fire media demands I’d say it’s not instant, but nor should it be. Shaping Youth is in the same boat…we experience lags and glitches sometimes too, and we’re on WordPress. Many say my link load is heavy, and that there’s so much content that it’s never a sure bet how long it will take to pop away from the page…

That said, I LOVE giving readers the depth they deserve, so patience (and optimization) are what I’ll go for with our site overhaul coming soon too.

One of our readers has an interesting feature on her blog to assess the ‘read time’ of her content, which I’d never seen before.

Wild. (And courteous/helpful, providing she can eyeball that stuff accurately!) She basically says “another 2 minutes after the jump” or whatever. Impressive. sheesh. Talk about micro-media mgmt!

I’m about to link to you in another post on media consolidation going up Monday (the whack a Murdoch game) so stay tuned. Keep up the great work…and for the record, I enjoy your blog as it is! :-)

    no, not at all.

it may be blogger. there have been times i have not been able to get on my own or anybody’s, but it seems to go away.

yesterday at school i couldn’t even get google mail or calendar.

is there a project this week? (i have checked follow comments so you don’t have to come visit!)

It’s not terribly slow on this connection, but I sometimes read blogs on my cellphone and yours is almost impossible to read thusly. Just gives me more to read when I do get to a computer though.

Kids slow in the morning. My daughter creature has to leave for school by 7:45 and she has to get dressed, eat breakfast, and make her lunch before she goes. By my estimate that should take about 45 minutes to an hour, but according to her she has to get up at 6:00 in order to have enough time to get everything done…the last time she stayed with us she decided to set her alarm to 5:30 so that she “didn’t have to rush.”

    Crazy kid.

i haven’t had any problems with it. ^.^*

  12. Mom Unplugged says:

Thank you all so much for taking the time to comment. I see quite a variety of responses. I guess it is just sometimes good, sometimes not. And as for Ragnar’s cell-phone…I never even thought of anyone trying to read “Unplug Your Kids” on a cell phone, wow!

I do think I am ready for some sort of overhaul though. We’ll see.

Christine: Thanks for the links. I loved the speed optimization site (I’d been using a different, less thorough one). Haven’t tried the browsershots yet, but that’ll be interesting. I already know from experience that I much prefer the look of UPYK with Firefox (what I use) than with Explorer. Thanks for the offer of assistance by the way, I really appreciate it!

Andree: “Puzzle” is the theme for this week’s project. I promised to actually do it myself this week, but we haven’t yet so I am as behind as you. I’ll “see” you on Monday for that I hope.

  13. laughingatchaos says:

Yeah, slower than others. I’m on a DSL line, with Firefox as my browser. I switched to WordPress and LOVE IT!

  14. Dana says:

    It’s fast for me!

  15. Matt Pregont says:

    It’s leisurely to load.

  16. Tamara says:

So funny- the variety of responses.

I did time it just now. It took your site 2 full minutes to load on my machine and I would say that is typical for me. I can’t think of another site that I have had that slow a time loading. I have also had IE crash several times as well.

  17. Mom Unplugged says:

These responses are so interesting! I think I should also have asked everyone to tell me which browser they use. I have seen my site on Internet Explorer and don’t think it looks as good and it always seems to load more slowly too. I use Firefox and it is lickety-split for me!

Anyhow, I think there’ll be some big changes here (hopefully soon). A two minute load time is simply unacceptable (thanks for timing it Tamara!). I may be moving.

  18. Mom Unplugged says:

Welcome Angel! Thanks for suffering a “leisurely load” and stopping by. I hope to fix it soon!

  19. homeschooljourney says:

I have found if quite slow. I’m pretty sure it’s a blogger problem. I used to use blogger too. I switched to wordpress.
