Welcome to Unplug Your Kids at its new home. I hope you like it and, most of all, I hope it loads faster!
There are a few differences from the old blog. I have combined the toy and book recommendations in with the main blog. I plan on trying to recommend one toy and one book per week. You can access my recommendations in the categories menu (“toy recommendations”and “book recommendations” - with subcategories under each heading).
One neat feature of WordPress, is that it allows for the creation of “Pages.” The top right sidebar shows the links to the pages I have created, including the Unplugged Toystores, Unplugged Bookstores, and a page about the weekly Unplugged Project for anyone who wants to know more about that.
Between having company all week and trying to get this set up, I haven’t had a lot of time to work out every detail. The internal links do not function properly yet, and there is something weird going on with the size of the categories drop-down menu, as well as some other details that need attending to.
As a die-hard perfectionist, I hate to put the blog online with any untidiness or disorganization, so I apologize. However, knowing me, I felt that if I didn’t make myself put it online now, it might be years before it was “perfect enough” in my mind.
I am eager to get on with the business of blogging …
So here it is!
PS. I plan on being around more now that the bulk of the work is done.
Hooray!!! Success!!! After two days spent obsessing over the tech problem I have been having, it is solved. I had put a dash in the code when it should have been an underscore!
Unbelievable. Two days of my life wasted because of an erroneous dash.
The good news is that I can stop obsessing about computer code and clean the house before my children disappear beneath a pile of rubble. I might even get to my own Unplugged Project today too! Reminder: the theme this week is sculpture. Please join us!
Which is slower: My kids when they get ready for school in the morning, or my blog?
If my blog is slower than my kids, then it is definitely time for a remodel since NOTHING ON THIS EARTH could be slower than my kids in the morning when we are late for school. The half-life of Uranium is shorter than the time it seems to take them to brush their teeth sometimes.
I have been meaning to take a little, informal poll of those who read my blog:
Do you find it slow to load?
Obviously slow is a relative term that is heavily dependent upon technology and personal endurance, but I have had some complaints. I have recently eliminated quite a few items from my sidebars but I don’t know how much difference this has made.
What is your non-scientific opinion of the speed (or lack thereof) that you experience here?
By the way, I am experimenting with a simple white template which will probably load faster.
Thanks for the input!
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
If you are not in the United States, I wish you a happy day full of thanks nonetheless!
Thanks to morguefile.com and photographer ppdigital for this photo.
We had a fabulous time on our vacation. Thanks Dad and M.! But…no matter how fun the vacation, there is always something wonderful about arriving home, opening your front door, and aahhh….home…..
Yesterday (day 1 at home) I was a zombie, still recovering from my four hour flight and six hours total of driving by myself with three children ages six and under. My 5 year-old and 6 year-old are great travellers, but my 19 month-old is not.
I tried a few of your traveling with young toddlers tricks from the comments to my Traveling Unplugged post (thanks!), but alas, I had little success. She is an awful traveler. She did have ten minutes of fun with a water bottle, but suffice it to say that most of the flight was pretty ugly.
I am, however, home. That is all that matters. Plus, chances are that I will never meet any of those people on the plane again in my lifetime!
