My Mom (Sue Huszar, Debbie Bailey)

By Mom Unplugged, April 22, 2007 8:53 pm

This is my 15 month-old’s current favorite so I have to write about it. I have had this for all three of my children and they all find at absolutely FASCINATING at about this age (and beyond). The book consists of simple (and honestly, kind of ordinary) photographs of mothers and children playing, cooking, reading, and doing other different things together.

The photos look homemade (maybe this is part of the attraction?) but they are very racially and culturally diverse.

My kids have all loved it. My four year-old really didn’t want to let his baby sister have this one, so he is “lending” it to her. There is definitely something fascinating here!

Another plus is that My Mom is a board book, so it has lasted through three children loving it. I don’t have to worry about my 15 month-old destroying it.

There are other similar books in the series about Dads, Grandmas, Grandpas, Brothers, Sisters, and Families. I think we may get a few more since my baby loves these so!

Love and Kisses (Sarah Wilson, Melissa Sweet)

By Mom Unplugged, March 5, 2007 9:01 pm

This sweet board book reminds me of a simpler version of Because Brian Hugged His Mother, a version aimed at even younger children. This teaches the littlest ones in the simplest way, that “what goes around, comes around.”

We follow a kiss as it travels from a girl, to her cat, to a cow, to many other animals, and then eventually back to the cat and then the girl. In the end, “you’ll have your love and kisses back!”

Baby Faces (DK Publishing)

By Mom Unplugged, March 1, 2007 2:46 pm

Babies love faces and my babies have all loved this simple board book.

Each of the 16 pages has a different baby with a different expression. Underneath the full-page photo is a one word caption describing the baby (“happy,” “sad,” “laughing,” etc.).

Hint: Toddlers think it is the height of hilarity if Mom or Dad imitates the babies’ expressions while reading aloud (just don’t let anyone else see you!).

Counting Kisses (Karen Katz)

By Mom Unplugged, February 15, 2007 8:55 pm

This is a book for kissing babies to sleep.

A crying baby gets kissed to sleep starting with “ten little kisses on teeny tiny toes,” counting down to “one last kiss on your sleepy, dreamy head.” Mommy kisses, Daddy kisses, big sister kisses, even dog kisses and cat kisses.

My 1 year-old laughs when we read this book accompanied by all the kisses.

Available in hardcover or board book format.

Elmer, The Patchwork Elephant

By Mom Unplugged, February 14, 2007 9:06 pm

This toy is very cute and colorful. I also like it because it is all one piece and has nothing that a baby could rip off and swallow (except maybe the ears, but baby would have to be awfully strong!).

My littlest has had this since she was 9 months old and she has always loved it. I think the bright colors are very interesting to a baby.

This would make a nice gift with the Elmer book that I write about here, or an Elmer board book for littler ones. To see some adorable Elmer board books, check out: Elmer’s Friends Board Book or Elmer’s Colors Board Book.

This Elmer stuffed toy is becoming harder to find. Mine came from a Borders bookstore, but I don’t think they carry them any more. After a Google search, I found them available here.
