2nd Annual TV-Turnoff Week Blog Challenge

By Mom Unplugged, April 3, 2008 10:39 pm

So have you thought about my proposal? TV-Turnoff Week is April 21-27. Can you and your family turn it off for a week? Would you like to try? If so, then sign up for the Unplug Your Kids TV-Turnoff Week Blog Challenge!

Here’s how it works:

Phase 1 –

1) Write a post about the challenge that sets forth your goals, reasons for joining in, etc. The more people we can reach and get to join in, the more fun and educational it will be! Remember, it is not just about giving up TV, what about the “other screens” in your life? The computer is my personal downfall so I will be concentrating on reducing that.

2) Link to your post in Mr. Linky below (leave a comment too in case Mr. Linky goes haywire, as occasionally happens, and I have to take him off).

3) Steal the Blog Challenge badge and put it in your sidebar, linking to Unplug Your Kids. Let me know if you need help with this step.

Two sizes:

Phase 2 –

Do your best to meet your goals from April 21-27. If you aren’t successful, it’s OK. What is important is to try, and to learn something from the experience.

Phase 3 -

1) After TV-Turnoff Week ends (April 27th is the last day), write a post about how it went: the good, the bad, and the ugly! Sharing experiences helps everyone.

2) I will also write a “How it Went” post and I will put up a new Mr. Linky. Put the link to your “How it Went” post in Mr. Linky (plus comment just in case).

3) On Tuesday, May 6th I will draw a random name from among those who completed the challenge (whether you met your goals or not) and put up their final post. That person will win a $10 Amazon gift certificate.

No blog?

You can join in too. Email me your goals, hopes, and dreams before the TV-Turnoff Week begins ,and I will post them on Unplug Your Kids. At the end, email me your “How it Went” information, and I will post it here too. You will then be entered in the drawing for the gift certificate.

My email for questions or entries: unplugyourkids “at” gmail “dot” youknowwhat.

What a great idea! I’d like to participate and I think my husband will go for it too but better discuss it with him first. I’ll need help keeping the TV off with 2 adult children and a teenager in the house!

I’m pretty nervous about doing this this year. For one thing, I think my nearly four year old will be more resistive this year. Second, hubby is going to be away that week which means all entertaining falls on me. Third, I’m pretty addicted to my computer time. Ah, what the heck!

Great idea! We actually don’t own a tv either – or any video game systems. Haven’t owned a tv in over a year. I think it’s very beneficial for the children and family as a whole. Of course every family has different needs and directions from the Lord, too! We know he spoke to us last year to give it up. Excellent challenge! Looking forward to hearing how it goes for those who participate. :)

I’m in, we used to do this every year with my older daughters. Now I look forward to doing it with my younger one and my sons. Honestly, my hubby, will be the challenging one. I may need help getting the badge installed. I am no good at anything that is not in a cut & paste format. Thanks.

  20. Great contest. For those who worry about things to do when all the recreational screens in your life go dark, take a moment before April 21st and visit http://www.screentime.org for ideas of things you can do instead.
You should also know that we are setting up Media Impact Task Forces around the nation, and if you are interested in getting involved with others concerned about the impact of electronic media in our lives, this is a good opportunity to have a positive impact on your family and community.
    Good luck!

I’ve got an advantage: we haven’t watched TV in years! But you’re right about computer screentime!

Once the communications company called to ask why we had phone and internet service through them but not the cable. I said “Well probably because we don’t own a TV”. The silent moment was long and then he gasped and echoed: “You don’t have a TV? What do you do then?” My daughter was eavesdropping and she sang out loud enough for all to hear: “WE READ! WE READ!” I told him he should try it and he cleared his throat and said “Oh, I don’t think I could do that.”
